Complaint against staff at MTN Store Howard Centre

Dear MTN,

My first day as an MTN customer and I’m pretty appalled at customer service I’ve received so far. My husband upgraded his MTN contract at the MTN store in Howard Centre in Pinelands yesterday in order to get me the new iPhone 7. I planned to use the phone on an MTN pay as you go account, my husband would continue to use his phone, which he loves, on the contract.

I told the manager that I’d heard that the camera on the iPhone 7 plus was much better than the iPhone 7,. He informed me that the camera on the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus were exactly the same, and that the only difference between the two was the size of the phone. I joked that I didn’t want a bigger phone as it would just weigh my handbag down, and if the camera was the same, I’d take the iPhone 7. The shop assistant then took the phone out of the box to check that all the components were there, and we signed the new contract. Later that day, I learned that the manager was misinformed, and the camera on the plus is vastly different.

Today my husband attempted to return the phone to the store and get the iPhone 7 plus. The manager flatly denied ever having said the cameras were the same. He said that because we’d broken the seal, he would not change the phone. We did not break the seal, the shop assistant opened the box in the store. He claimed the sale had been recorded, and that he would listen to it and let us know on Monday if he’d said that. Meanwhile, the shop assistant googled the difference and commented, “Oh, it is very different, I guess you live and learn” implying that they had given us the wrong information. I don’t feel the manager is trustworthy and I believe he is going to tamper with the recording (if it even exists). Is every sale in MTN stores recorded?

I would like to lay a formal complaint against both the manager and the shop assistant at the Howard Centre MTN store. How do I go about this? Additionally, I want to exchange the iPhone 7 I was sold for the iPhone 7 Plus as I need the camera for work. The only reason I got the iPhone 7 and not the plus was because the manager gave us the wrong information, I did not use the phone or set it up, other than to plug it into the charger. Obviously, one expects the people working in an MTN Store to be informed, and expects to be able to trust them at their word. I don't believe the manager intends to behave with integrity, and I will not be surprised if come Monday we discover the alleged recording has been tampered with in some way . Please can you assist in sorting this matter out?

Many thanks, Rachel

Thank you for assisting with the matter. The phone has been returned now and the upgrade cancelled. Thanks to Mtn's customer service staff.
