Claiming after two years

A few years ago i took out two mtn contract, i upgraded once afterwhich i decided to cancel my conract. the month that my contract ended the numbers were deactivated, my debit orders stopped going off. when i called MTN i found that my contract was over. i didn't hear from MTN again. i later did a check and my credit record showed that the MTN contract was paid up. Now after two years i recieve an email from a company claiming that MTN has handed me over to pay an amoutn close to R2000. what i don't understand is why did they wait two years to get in contact with me if there was any outstanding amounts? i would have gladlypaid it then when the contract was cancelled now suddenly i get this email demanding i pay.
