Beware when cancelling your MTN contract, the terms on their website are vastly different to the actual amount they "quote" you to cancel.
I have been a loyal MTN customer for more than 20 years now and have been happy until today. I have a data contract with MTN which expires on the 11th of June 2022 with a cost of R299 per months. Today I was at an MTN store to do the cancellation (you have to pay the fee in store) and called 135 for a cancellation fee only to be totally blown away when the operator told me the cancellation fee would be R1 400 (this for a R299 p/month contract which expires three months from now). Even if I paid out the entire three months left on the contract this would be R299 x 3 = R897. Over and above the fact that this was absurd I told the lady MTN's cancellation terms are one months subscription. She said she doesn't know the terms but this is what the system is showing her. I asked for a supervisor who then proceeded to tell me the cancellation fee was R950, so less than the first but still crazy and changing from person to person. Again I tried to explain to him MTN's cancellation policy (which he didn't know) and he very rudely tried to explain why the fee was so high. The only reason I was cancelling is that we are going abroad for 12 months but the service I received from the call centre was absolutely abysmal and against the terms MTN have posted on their website re cancellations. Sadly after 20 years of being a MTN customer I don not intend taking up a new MTN contract when we return to S.A..
