BEWARE- *****/ **** on your MTN account

My mother, a widowed pensioner, recently received correspondence from MTN on the 31st January 2024 telling her she has been signed up for a new contract that includes 2 new numbers to be added to her account in addition to her existing MTN number (her current contract is only due to expire in July 2024). She never signed this contract and did not agree to these 2 numbers being added to her account as she has no knowledge of these 2 numbers or their owners. Nor did she ever respond to an SMS or answer any calls from MTN. Then on 21st February 2024 she received an invoice from MTN dated 17th February for the amount of R6,283.65 to be paid on 25th March 2024 (her normal invoiced amount is R145.00) so a 4,300% increase! For a pensioner this is devastating. We have been to MTN to report it and they told us it will take a minimum of 21 days for them to look into it, but they cannot change the current account or debit order, and ABSA bank has said they won't cancel the debit order (even though my mother never signed a change in the debit order)! SHOCKING that this can take place, and target pensioners. I also suspect this could not have taken place without the explicit knowledge and/or actions of an MTN staff member. BEWARE of these ****s/ *****. I am also shocked that ABSA bank won't cancel the debit order even though MTN has acknowledge the possible *****! Concerned son.
