Beware MTN's bogus month-to-month packages!
Beware MTN's bogus month-to-month packages! I signed up for an MTN Home Starter month-to-month package in April. On signing up I was asked to pay R150 for a SIM card, a pro-rata amount for April and one month in advance. This amounted to R565 for a R249 package. In the setup I was asked to select between the 4th, 5th, 6th, or 15th as the debit order date. I selected the 4th as it was the nearest to the end of the month. On the 4th of May the debit order went off my account and I believed all was in order. On the 12th my internet stopped working. I went into the MTN store and they told me that all was in order and there was no reason for the internet to not be working. I emailed customer services and got a reply back saying that the service was out of contract. I then phoned customer services and they again told me that everything was paid and that they could not see anything wrong. They put me through to technical services who then told me that the number was disconnected due to non-payment as the payment must be made on the 24th of the month to reflect. I explained that that was not an option that I was given and they told me to either go into the store to redo the service or wait until the end of May and hopefully I would receive internet again in June. I went into the shop... They could not help me. They put me though to customer services who said there was nothing wrong with my account, all payments were up to date, and that the service should be working. I queried the debit order date and was again told that the only dates available for selection were the 4th, 5th, 6th, or 15th. If I want to make a payment on the 24th, I will have to make a cash payment at the MTN shop. So, if you choose to take out an MTN month-to -month package. Ensure you have three months' payment available to pay the upfront fee and the next month before the 25th of the month or you will be cut off with no recourse, even though you paid everything asked of you.
