Being kept hostage by MTN's system

As a longstanding MTN customer with four active contracts totaling R5300 per month, I expected my fifth contract application to proceed smoothly. Unfortunately, my recent and ongoing experience at the MTN George Garden Route store that falls under FMZ Cellular has been far from satisfactory, leading to a frustrating and costly ordeal that is still unresolved.

After being quickly approved for a new contract, a system error occurred during checkout, leaving my order in an unresolved state. Despite being assured that the matter would be addressed within 24 hours, no progress has been made, forcing me to extend my stay in George at considerable personal expense. I am now on my fourth day of waiting, with additional accommodation costs of R1050 per night, and I have been compelled to book further accommodations until Monday, hoping for a resolution. This delay has not only been financially burdensome but has also caused me to miss significant family events, such as my daughter's last netball game of the year, which she found deeply distressing.

What is most concerning is the lack of effective communication and the apparent inability to resolve a seemingly straightforward system error. Despite my numerous follow-ups, I have been informed that the issue remains unresolved, with no clear timeline in sight. I have also been told that the system error cannot be overridden, leaving me trapped in a situation where the order cannot be processed or canceled.

As a professional with extensive experience in network engineering and systems development, I find it perplexing that there is no mechanism for someone in a position of authority within MTN to address or override this error. The over-reliance on a ticketing system, without the ability for direct intervention by a decision-maker, highlights a significant flaw in MTN's internal processes. This issue is further exacerbated by the unavailability of key personnel, including Jacques and Franklin, the store managers for FMZ Cellular, the franchise holders of the MTN store. These managers have been consistently unreachable, and the fact that their contact information is inaccessible, combined with the staff’s limited ability to communicate effectively, only compounds the problem.

The absence of accountability and the lack of urgency in addressing this ongoing issue are particularly disheartening. Despite my clear communication regarding the urgency of the situation from the outset, the responses from MTN have been inadequate. This lack of responsiveness extends to the regional management level, with no contact from Riekie Coetzer, the Regional Manager for FMZ Cellular, under whose jurisdiction the store operates.

Given the seriousness of this matter and the significant inconvenience and cost it continues to cause, I would have expected a more proactive approach from MTN. Unfortunately, my experience has left me questioning the commitment of MTN and its franchisees to customer service and problem resolution. It is my hope that MTN will take this feedback seriously and implement the necessary changes to prevent similar issues from occurring in the future.

This ongoing situation has turned what should have been a simple contract renewal into a costly and distressing nightmare, and I am still awaiting a resolution.
