Bank statement required for getting a month to month service, why?

I was at MTN Langenhoven park @ The Park early on Saturday morning, 27 July 2024 and asked for a 10G R99 month to month sim. Which by the way is pre-paid, meaning I pay R99 beforehand and then get the month of service. Taking my ID and proof of address for RICA, I would have thought that would be sufficient... But no, they wanted my bank statement also. Why? It's pre-paid... The person who assisted me even called someone else to confirm and they denied me service. I ended up going online and ordered it from there, no issue at all and no need for providing a bank statement. The only requirement being ID and proof of address upon delivery, which makes 100% sense. Wow, they just do not want to do business and I believe they are costing MTN a few customers. Unfortunately I will not visit this branch again.
