Bad Customer Service
I paid a settlement of R7,844 in Jan 2025 to cancel my contract. MTN failed to close the account and used my money to pay for monthly fees I had already cancelled. Now they have used all my money and are threatening legal action for an extra R1,297 while suspending my other active services. This is a violation of CPA Section 14.

16 Jan 2026, 10:36Title: MTN Misappropriated R7,844 Settlement – Calling for Regulator Investigation and FinesReview Body:In January 2025, I paid a full settlement of R7,844 to cancel my MTN contract. Instead of closing the account, MTN kept the money as "credit" and used it to pay for monthly fees for a service I had already terminated. Now that they’ve exhausted my settlement money, they are threatening me with legal action for an extra R1,297 and have suspended my other active services. This is a blatant violation of Section 14 of the Consumer Protection Act. MTN is effectively "*****ing" settlement capital to fund unauthorized subscriptions.I am calling on ICASA and the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (CGSO) to hit MTN with the maximum administrative fines allowed—which can be up to 10% of annual turnover for repeated CPA violations and unfair trade practices.Do not trust MTN with settlement payments. They do not close your account; they just take your cash. I demand an immediate refund and restoration of my services.

04 Apr 2026, 09:55 On 31 January 2025, an MTN call‑centre agent calculated a settlement amount of R7 844 required to cancel my contract. Acting on MTN’s instructions, I paid the amount in‑store. The payment reflected on MTN’s system on 3 February 2025 due to standard banking processing. Despite receiving full settlement, MTN failed to cancel the contract. Instead, MTN unilaterally app**** the settlement funds to monthly billing without my knowledge or consent. Once the amount was depleted, MTN continued billing, created artificial arrears, issued suspension notices, and suspended my service. I logged multiple disputes with MTN, each issued with official service request and Siebel ticket reference numbers. Despite these investigations being open and unresolved, MTN proceeded to report adverse credit information. The listing was made while the matter was still under investigation, which is procedurally improper and ********. I am currently pursuing formal regulatory and legal remedies, but I am raising this publicly to highlight the ongoing failure to resolve the matter and to seek urgent corrective action: • Backdated cancellation • Removal of adverse credit listings • Refund of the settlement amount • Written confirmation that the account is closed This experience reflects poor service quality, lack of accountability, and serious administrative failures.
