Avoid MTN if you value your time, money, and sanity.

I am completely fed up with the incompetence and lack of resolution from MTN regarding an ongoing billing issue that has dragged on since July 2024.

I have a Superflex data plan (R299), but MTN has been attempting to debit my account twice every month due to an internal error on their side. In some cases the debit goes through, and in other cases I have had to literally empty my bank account before the debit date just to prevent them from taking money they are not entitled to. This is completely unacceptable and not how a customer should be forced to manage their finances.

I first reported this issue on 17/09/2024, with proof. I followed up more than 10 times via email and made over 20 calls — all ignored or unresolved.

I escalated the matter to Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), reference MPU010005/24, and MTN’s response was that there are two numbers linked, which is why I am being billed twice.

Let me be very clear: The second number is NOT in use It only exists because of an MTN sim swap done in-store I do NOT have access to that number This is 100% an MTN system/configuration error

Despite explaining this multiple times, MTN’s response is that I must cancel the subscription myself using that number. This is completely ridiculous — how must I cancel something on a number I do not have access to because of MTN’s own process?

To this day: The duplicate debit attempts are still happening The subscription has not been cancelled No one has taken ownership of resolving this

This has now been ongoing for almost TWO YEARS, and the only way I can protect my money is by manually making sure my account is empty before MTN tries to debit it. That is beyond unacceptable.

MTN’s service is shocking: No accountability No proper investigation No resolution, even after ICASA escalation

At this point, it is clear that MTN either cannot fix their own systems or simply chooses not to.

I demand that: The duplicate subscription be cancelled immediately and permanently A full refund of all amounts that were successfully debited incorrectly

Avoid MTN if you value your time, money, and sanity.
