During July I received numerous calls and sms's from MTN, stating that I was eligible for an update. I was urged (by MTN Reds Mall) to do so before the 31st July, in order to qualify for a gift voucher towards screen protector/cell phone case. I went for the upgrade on 24 July at Reds Mall MTN, and selected the Samsung Galaxy A34 5G on an MegaTalk/Gigs XS package @ R299 per month over 3 years. At no stage during the process was I told that I am upgrading too early and that penalties would apply. Much to my surprise, my debit order on the 1st September was for R579.33 (almost double what I normally pay, and my debit order bounced due to insufficient funds in the account). When I called MTN customer services on 2 September (Mandiluve), I was told that I had upgraded too early and that I would be paying for both the new and the old phones until November. (REF NR ***). I also went to MTN Reds Mall on 4 September and spoke to Mpho (the manager). She said it was a mistake and that she would correct it. When an upgrade is done, the old contract is canceled. I paid the correct balance outstanding according to Mpho (R342), which left an arrears balance of R237.33. She promised to have it corrected within 5 - 7 working days. I also registered the complaint via MTN's sms portal and received an automated reply that the matter would be attended to. Nothing has been done. Much to my dismay, the statement received from MTN on 12 September indicated that NOT AS SINGLE CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE and I owe MTN R867.85 on the 1st October. That would be the repeat of the R579.33 bill plus the "arrears" plus interest. I am still being billed for both phones. I have been a customer with MTN for longer than I care to remember. I will not be renewing my contract with them when the time comes.
