APPALLING SERVICE FROM MTN

Appalling lack of service from MTN – how long must I still be waiting??? In January 2020 my latest MTN cell phone (Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime, I think the model was) went blank. I took it to the MTN shop in Malmesbury (Shop 3a, De Bron Centre, Voortrekker Road, Malmesbury, 7299) and handed it in to be repaired.

After that I never had any feedback about my phone. As I don’t live in Malmesbury, I queried where my phone was when visiting the town again after about a month, but I was told that it had been sent to MTN Head Office in Johannesburg for repairs where something had gone wrong and my phone had neither been repaired nor returned to the Malmesbury shop.

The shop assistant then asked whether he should get the phone back unrepaired. I pointed out that it would be of no use to me and asked him to arrange that it be repaired and returned.

Several weeks later I drove to Malmesbury MTN again and I was told that owing to current lockdown conditions my phone was still at head office. I gave the assistant my cell phone number (fortunately my older cell phone still works) and also my Telkom number and he assured me that he would telephone me when my cell phone had been received back at the Malmesbury branch

It is now late in August and I am still waiting for the promised telephone call, but in vain.

Even worse has followed: I received an account from MTN by e mail informing me that I owe MTN almost R2000. IMPOSSIBLE! I am a pensioner and I use my cell phone to send and receive messages (e.g. from my bank after credit card purchases), very rarely to make a telephone call .

A businessman in town runs a bustling set of business concerns constantly using his cell phone to contact numerous organisations both in this country and abroad and his monthly account comes to about R1200. (I should mention that he switched from MTN to a rival cell phone organisation a few years ago: obviously a wise move.)

How should I go about retrieving my - hopefully repaired and working - cell phone? And whom should I contact about that absurdly exaggerated account?
