An expensive mistake

I took out a contract with MTN for a data package which was quite reasonable. Unfortunately due to my ignorance it's not enough for my needs. I asked if I could top up which apparently is not possible. If I take out another contract I'm told I have to cancel the original and pay over R2000.. I find that excessive considering I would be upgrading. I am a pensioner and can't afford to do this.
