Within one week I had two unauthorised MTN content services deduct daily amounts from my account without my permission. When I called MTN they said I must have subscribed to the services. I asked them to send me proof or refund my money. I am still waiting. These are daily subscription amounts of R2 and R3.50. It is not huge amounts but multiply this by 10 million subscriptions.
I pastor a local church and have had a number of people complain about airtime disappearing. Since the amounts are small many people just give up on trying to get a refund. I believe this a strategy of cellphone and technology companies to extract money from the poor as it is mainly the poor or senior citizens who cannot get cellphone contracts and are forced to buy airtime. This is a crime against the poor and vulnerable.
I have just checked my 81year old father’s phone and there was a subscription service running deducting R7 per day from his airtime. He had no idea but kept complaining that his airtime was disappearing and nobody paid attention.
Please help me stop this ********* practice.
