Airtime being used instead of minutes

I purchased mtn anytime minutes and instead of using the minutes, its been using my airtime as normal. What is the purpose of purchasing minutes if it uses your airtime. Plus, the minutes are meant to call any network but it doesn't seem to do that also. I want my money back.
