In November 2023, our company diligently paid our MTN account using the provided Standard Bank account details as specified on the invoice. Little did we know that this seemingly straightforward transaction would spiral into a nightmare of incompetence and frustration.

Come 10 January 2024, alarm bells started ringing when our creditors department noticed that the payment had not yet been allocated to our account. Immediately, we took action, emailing the proof of payment to our designated MTN Account Manager, seeking clarification on the delay and requesting prompt allocation of the payment along with a new statement. To our dismay, the response we received was as baffling as it was infuriating. We were informed that the payment had not been allocated due to a reference number issue, specifically because our company name was included in the reference. Despite reassurances from the Account Manager that the matter would be resolved, weeks passed with no progress.

Repeated follow-up emails were sent on February 12, 14, 15, 19, and 20, 2024, with each response from MTN containing nothing but hollow promises and excuses. Despite their acknowledgment of the issue and the supposed logging of a ticket, the situation remained unresolved.

The conclusion of this incompetence came crashing down on 14 March 2024, when all our company's contracts were summarily suspended due to the unresolved payment allocation issue. As a business operating 24/7, this suspension had catastrophic consequences. Key operations staff and managers were rendered unable to communicate with clients, resulting in significant financial losses and inconveniences.

In a desperate attempt to salvage the situation, I personally visited an MTN branch, only to be met with further disappointment. I was informed that their entire system was offline and that they could do nothing to assist me at that time. The only assurance offered was that our account could not be suspended again for 24 hours after it was suspended. This lack of urgency and accountability is simply unacceptable.

The question now looms: will MTN compensate us for the immense inconvenience, financial losses, and resources expended due to their monumental failure to address a simple payment allocation issue in a timely manner? Based on our experience thus far, it seems highly unlikely.

In conclusion, our experience with MTN has been nothing short of disastrous. Their incompetence, lack of urgency and disregard for customer satisfaction have cost our company dearly. We implore MTN to rectify this situation immediately and provide the compensation and assurances we rightfully deserve. Until then, we caution others against entrusting their business to an entity that fails so spectacularly in fulfilling its obligations.
