Wont stop contract

How do you cancel a contract. Almost a year since contract expired. They say send a mail to cancel contract , you do and nothing happens except going into arrears and getting threatening calls. Then they say pay it up to date then we will cancel it and what happens then you go into arrears again still no cancellation of contract and you start again. WHAT DO YOU DO??????
