Conned into buying sim card

I have a Mr Price account. I have a small bnb and moved house so I buy a lot from Mr Price. I pay my account well. I was phoned and told that to say thank you for being a good customer I was getting a loyalty card and part of the package was a free sim card. I want the loyalty card as I buy almost everything I need from Mr Price. The call center lady then sped through the terms and conditions. It was high speed like I have never heard high speed before. At the time I was genuinely impressed that a human could speak that fast. She had already told me all about my loyalty card and I had checked it really was free because I did not want extra charges on my account like the Edgars club magazine which they charge for. I am always careful with my account and do not want extra things added on. She was going through the terms and conditions because that is what she legally has to do. I could not understand a word she was saying . At the end she slowed down again. I asked if it was definitely free. She said yes and asked if I understood. I said yes because I had checked that it was free and was agreeing to a loyalty card. When the package arrived there was no loyalty card only a sim with a contract. You sign for the package sealed then they give it to you. When you open it the courier has left and inside the package is a sim you have already agreed to and a R200 pm contract. I phoned immediately to cancel but I have been charged a R100 connection fee and R200 aim top up. It would have been R200 per month for 12 months. They said it was a valid sale because I said I understand. I understood I was getting a loyalty card and a free sim which I could use if I wanted to. If the conversation had started with you can have a sim that you need to pay R200 a month for I would not have even spoken to the sales lady because I did not want an over priced sim card. I could go to Cell C and get a phone and a package for less. They conned me by telling me I was getting a loyalty card which I definitely would use as I shop there every month. There is no loyalty card so the whole thing was a lie. Yes I was stupid enough to take a call from a call center. I paid for that mistake and I will not do that again. I have always been happy with Mr Price but now I do not trust them at all. They are using a legal technicality to say it was a valid sale. They know lying to a customer to say they are getting a loyalty card and getting them to agree to a free gift by tricking them is not a valid sale. I agreed to a loyalty card like I understand loyalty cards. You shop you earn points you get a reward when you shop. This was a total lie. They did not even send a loyalty card as part of the package. The lady I spoke to at their call center today put the phone down on me when I said I want my call to go through management after I said everything I have said here. What they are doing is *******. They are tricking customers and pretending it is legal because they ask you if you understand. You do not understand because they have **** to you. There is no loyalty card and the sim is not free.

I am not the only customer this happened to. They are trying to bump up their account instalments by adding these rediculously over priced sims to the account.

A trick is not a real sale. Training call center people to speed through terms and conditions so that the customers cannot hear parts about charges is not a real sale. They may be legally able to get away with it, but they will lose customers because you cannot continue to trust or support a business that has phoned you and deliberately sold you a trick.

I am happy to have got results. I am still not happy about the underhanded way that Mr Price sold me a sim card pretending I was being rewarded with a loyalty card. This is not acceptable business practice. I know that a lot of other people have been caught with this sim card story. I will be looking into bringing it to the attention of the general public to prevent other people in South Africa being ****med. South african businesses need to be aware that using call centres to harrass and sell junk to their customers is completely unacceptable. I know times are hard for business, but tricking customers is just going to lose you the faith of your customers. The manager who came up with this **** should be investigated. I know a lot of companies do resort to selling products through call centres in order to bump up their monthly instalments from customers. Hopefully legally this practice will be investigated and more controls put in place to protect customers.
