medical services who just don’t care
I am writing to formally complain about an interaction I had today with a staff member named Ty, who handles MRI/MRA bookings for Morton and Partners.
I contacted Ty to book an MRA. As someone unfami**** with the procedure, I asked a few clarifying questions about the booking process, including what my financial responsibility would be regarding my medical aid coverage. Rather than providing clear information, Ty became visibly irritated and spoke to me in a scolding, condescending tone. When I asked for clarity on the payment process, he told me I should already know what my medical aid covers, rather than offering any guidance.
I remained calm throughout and asked him directly to show some patience and kindness, given how overwhelming this process already was for me. He did not. Instead, he repeated that it was my responsibility to know my medical aid coverage, and subsequently sent an email to the referring practice in which he again criticised me for asking about payment.
By the end of the call I was in tears, embarrassed, and genuinely anxious about being treated by this practice. I no longer felt safe or comfortable proceeding with the procedure under their care and have since cancelled my booking.
For comparison, the new practice I booked with handled the entire process with warmth and professionalism. They proactively explained the procedure, the co-payment, and the financial process without my having to ask, and checked in to make sure I understood and felt okay. This made the contrast in how Ty handled the situation even more stark.
I understand that booking staff deal with administrative processes daily, but for patients this is often an unfami**** and stressful experience, particularly around medical procedures and costs. I would ask that this complaint be formally noted, and that Ty receive guidance on patient communication and professionalism. I would also appreciate a response outlining what steps will be taken to address this.
We understand that navigating medical aid cover and the cost of a procedure can be a genuinely stressful and unfamiliar experience. Having listened to the recording, we did note that the tone of the call escalated once the co-payment amount was mentioned, and that this escalation came from your side and continued to build over the course of the call, including language directed at our staff that we don't consider acceptable. Throughout that escalation, Tyrrell remained calm and professional in how he responded to you. We share this not to dismiss how difficult the call might have been for you, but so you have a full and honest picture of what we found when we reviewed it.
We genuinely hope your upcoming appointment and procedure go smoothly, and we wish you well.

Having done so, we see it differently to how you've described it, and don't believe it was sent with any intention to criticise you.
The email in reference, outlined the appointment status and time and reiterated our internal procedures regarding payment and co-payment queries.
We recognise you experienced this situation differently, and we respect that.
This matter has been formally noted internally, and we'd welcome the opportunity to discuss it further with you directly on ***.
Further to your concern around the recording of the call: To clarify, all calls to our practice are preceded by an automated notice informing callers that the call is being recorded for quality and security purposes, and this would have played at the start of your call as it does for every call we receive. This recording process is standard across our practice and is what allowed us to review the interaction fairly and thoroughly once your complaint was raised. It also helps us hold our team accountable and use real interactions to improve how we train and support them. We want to reassure you that recordings are used strictly for quality, training, and complaint resolution purposes.
