MOMEMTUM
My husband had an insurance policy with Momentum. He had three policies. Life, risk and funeral policies. In March 2011 my husband phoned Momentum to inform them that he did not pay his policy for that month, they informed him that they will double debit him at the end of the month.
Unfortunately he had a massive heart attack and was admitted to Albert Luthuli Hospital on the 21st March 2018, he was three weeks in a coma and he passed on, on the 9th April 2011. We did advise Momentum of this in March via a phone call.
A financial advisor namely Anu Singh wrote to Momentum. He told them the whole story and he informed me that they agreed to pay, but after that things changed, he told us that they did not want to pay because when my husband was admitted in hospital , he was admitted as a security guard and not Owner. And they told Anu Singh that if I carry on with this case I will be charged for *****.
Also the risk benefit was supposed to cover the policy premium for the month it lapsed. Please see doc attached . There is still money on that plan. No one even informed us that the policy will lapse if one month is not paid.
Numerous times we contacted Momentum and the Ombudsman dealing with this case then told us that the policy lapsed. Why didn't they tell us this the first time. As they made us get docs from the hospital and run around pretending to investigate.
Now its almost seven years later and we heard about the problems that Momentum was having and it was on TV that anyone who had a problem with Momentum need to contact them.
At that time Mr Anu Singh tried contacting me because he said there was a big possibility with me getting this money.
When I contacted them recently , the only thing they say was that the policy lapsed. They don't have any other correspondence on the account saved.
I WOULD DEFINATELY NOT ADVISE MOMENTUM TO ANYONE AS THE REASONS THEY GIVE TO NOT PAY YOU IS RIDICULOUS. SAFE GUARD YOURSELF AGAINST THEM

As per the policy terms and conditions the policy was cancelled effective 1 March 2011, due to arrear premiums. This policy lapse was confirmed in a letter dated 4 April 2011.
Hence, the policy was not in force when Mr Abboy passed away on 9 April 2011 and therefor a death claim could not be considered.
I am sorry that you feel you were inconvenienced by Momentum and disadvantaged by the subsequent Ombudsman ruling. Regrettably, I cannot provide you with a more favorable response.

Take into mind that my husband was in a coma from the 21 March 2011 till the day he passed away. He corresponded with Momentum regarding the double premiums going out on the 1st of April 2011. So now do you hold a comatose person liable for this payment when they are fighting for their life.
When we informed Momentum about this they asked us to write to them as they were willing to offer some sort of payment, because of the circumstances surrounding the policy lapse. Not even the funeral policy of R50 000 was paid in.
We are not ******** to keep on writing to Momentum to ask for the same thing. They also said that the policy was not paid out due to him saying he was a security guard when he was admitted and not due to the lapse So now this is something new to us.
Please advise how can this be so?

Regrettably, your late husband’s policy was not in force when he passed away on 9 April 2011 and therefore a death claim could not be considered on this Momentum policy. The funeral benefit formed part of the noted policy and as such a claim for this benefit could also not be considered.
While the case was under discussion with the Ombudsman you requested an ex-gratia payment, which was declined based on the facts of this case.
