Cover Declined

Now.... I am not one to post things like this or rant and rave, but today I'm going to....... I was offered a life cover plan last week from Momentum and so I app****, as they had the best deal out of everyone else, last Friday to be exact, so that my family is covered if something happens to me. All went well, they gave me my monthly contribution amount, I received emails that welcomed me even, etc. After I sent the documents I got a phone call half an hour later telling me that my application has been declined because of my PCOS and BMI!! 😡. How does this have anything to do with the fact that I want to take make sure my family is financially secure if anything happens to me? So that means that because I suffer from PCOS and as a result my BMI is affected, which is out of my control, I don't qualify to get life cover to make sure my family is okay if something happens to me? I'm sorry, but I feel I am getting discriminated against! This is just bull****! I'm sorry. So if you're a big person because you have a condition, please don't try to take life cover from Momentum as it seems you need to be in tip top shape and have no medical issues just to get a life cover!!! 😡. This really upset me. [P.S PCOS is not life threatening]

Dear Ms Oosthuizen

The role of an underwriter is to ensure that policies are accepted at premium rates or terms that are appropriate based on the client’s risk profile. During the process of underwriting, we will obtain medical or other information which we will use to determine whether a client is eligible for the benefits they are applying for, or not.

The final underwriting decision based on the client’s risk profile will be significantly influenced by the nature of benefits the client is applying for. As an example, a client who has a pre-existing back problem who is applying for death benefit will not be negatively influenced where the same client applying for disability benefits will receive a back exclusion.

The underwriter will consider the long-term impact of medical conditions disclosed and the likelihood that these could result in one of the claim events defined in the benefits being app**** for.

Regretfully, we did not accept the risk according to the terms of underwriting.

The basic principle of the freedom to contract is that parties are free to choose who they contract with, what they contract for and on what terms.

Kind regards
MC
