Momentum Medical Aid: All Promises, No Real Cover

I have never been this unhappy with a service in my life. From day one, Momentum completely misled us about what their medical aid actually covers.

We were told everything is “100% covered” or “unlimited,” which gave us peace of mind — especially as we’re expecting our first child. But now that the bills are coming in, we’re getting surprise co-payments left and right. Momentum only covers 100% of the medical aid rate, which in reality is less than 25% of what doctors and hospitals actually charge.

If we had known the truth from the start, we would’ve made different decisions — either switched to another medical aid or taken proper gap cover. Instead, we’ve been paying thousands of rands every month for a plan that covers almost nothing in real-life situations.

Everything has to be paid out of your health saver, and nothing is ever fully covered. It’s exhausting, frustrating, and adds unnecessary stress during a time when stress is the last thing we need.

But the worst part? If your payment is late by a day, they’re quick to act. But when they fail to provide what was promised, there’s no accountability.

If I can give anyone advice: stay away from Momentum if you don’t want nasty surprises and unnecessary financial stress. This has been a horrible experience and a perfect example of how a medical aid can fail its members when they need it most.
