Eugene Marais ahospital. Dr Mushi
I took my mother to Eugene Marais Hospital on the 13th of January because she was very lethargic. She does have a Living Will but I did not take it with. Was not planning on taking her to hospital that day. I told them that she does not want to go on a ventilator. I said I will sign a DNR. They did not have a bed for her, so they told me that they were looking to move her to a different hospital. They later told me that they would be taking her to ICU 5 around 19h00. The lady at Trauma asked who her doctor was. I said it was Mushi but I want a different doctor. She said the rules of the hospital are that if she already has a doctor she can unfortunately not change doctors. I left when she was still in trauma. At 03h07 someone from ICU 1 phoned and said that they were going to put her on a ventilator. I told her that that is against her wishes. Her answer was that "I am only calling to inform you that that is what we are going to do. On her Medical Statement it saya that the ventilator was put in at Trauma, ao the medical aid does not cover it, as it has to be done in ICU. I phoned ICU 1 the next morning four times to ask of my mother was there. The first three times they said she was not there. I phoned Trauma, she was also not there. The fourth time I called ICU 1 they said "Oh. She is here." I went on the 14th to sign a DNR. The form was already filled in and signed by the doctor. I only signed it. There was no incident for a few days. The doctor phoned me once on the 14th. When I phoned back he had already left. Since then I have not had one call from the doctor. On the 20th of January I was told bt the sistee that she was put on antiviotics because she had Ecoli. I am not sure on which day it was that her infection count went up to 200. She was put on more antibiotics. On Wednesday the 4th of February at 1**** Dr Malefhalo phoned to say that Dr Mushi had told him to phone me to tell me that were going to do a tracheotomy. I told him that it was against her wishes. He asked if she has a Living Will and I said that she does and I will bring it as soon as possible. I arrived with her Living Will just before 18h00 that day. I had to fill in a new DNR because the previous one was marked incorrectly by me. I did not fill in the 1st DNR. I gave them her living will and they made me a copy. I went to stand by my mothers side and saw something moving in her mouth. I took off my glasses as I it is only for driving. I saw that my mother's mouth was filled with maggots. It was coming out her mouth and had pushed her mouth wide open. In utter shock I asked the sister why my mothers mouth was full of worms. She looked at me suprised and said "I don't know. We are pumping her stomach." I was speechless and just left. The next morning I phoned the case manager and she said she could not get involved. I spoke to the complaints manager who said that sge would take it up with the ward manager. spoke to the Ward Manager and she said she would report it. They moved her to a glass room and cleaned her mouth. On the 5th they had found another maggot and on the 6th they said there was nothing, till now. I laid a complaint against Life Hospital on Hello Peter on the 6th. I got an immediate response in which they asked all my details so that they could look up the mayter and get back to me. I have not heard anything since. I made an appointment with the doctor and saw him and the ward Manager on Monday the 9th of February. After asking him why there were maggots in her mouth he said it was a fly. Flies are everywhere. I asked him if he was going to remove the ventilator and he said no. He eill also not stop giving jer antiviotics as it is *********.I asked why the sister had told me it was because of the ventilator he said, "no, it is definitely not the ventilator. Only a fly." I asked the ward Manager who the Matron was. She said Mina, but I am not allowed to contact her besause it has to be done through the right channels, which is to report it to the ward Manager. I said that i had already done that and laid a complaint with the complaints manager and I get no feedback. After posting on a few groups on facebook yesterday, i got a call from the Sister Janeke at 18h38. I told her my story. She asked me what I wanted them to do. I don't know what I want, but someone needs to take accountability. I went to see my mother last night. Thue have taken her off all sedation, and medication. The ventilator was on CPAP. I went there today just after 12h00. She has still not woken up. I need a different doctor, I need trauma counseling and I need the persons who did not clean her mouth to be held responsible for their neglect. The doctors just get paid but there is no interest in the patient. Regards Lindi van Rensburg.
