Critical illness claim : Karin Nieuwoudt : Neurology

Critical illness payout -none. Shock of our lives. My neurologist submitted a medical report, as requested, with all supporting medical results (MRI , and also blood results) for a disorder named anti-phospholipid syndrome. This is an auto-immune disorder where the myelin sheath and small blood vessels are irrevocably damaged. I have been suffering with this disease for 20 years, are on heaps of brain medications, amongst others. Also blood thinning meds to prevent blood clots which can lead to stroke. (syndrome association) I suffer from headaches, blackouts, mood disorders (mania, bipolar, due to physical changes to the brain). The neurologist stated clearly in his medical report that I am not in any way capable to work in a corporate environment of any kind. Cerebral micro angiopathy is also recognized in MRI scans , a clear pre-cursor of dementia. Me and my husband felt totally shocked and could not believe that there were no compensation of any kind, whatsoever. The feedback via e-mail was cold, clinical, devoid of any compassion and in my opinion absoluty unacceptable. My husband have for 20 years pay a substantial amount of money every month in case there is ever a critical illness claim and we feel more than let down, to put it mildly. In the last email I stated that I will leave the matter at that, but after looking on the internet if there was somebody else that had issues with a payout, and a talk with my husband we decided there is no harm in putting our experience with the Critical Illness department with Momentum out there. The feedback they gave was that I was still in a position to live with my condition, which is absurd. I have been housebound since 2018, don't drive anymore, suffer from deep depression, are not emotionally able to receive guests (most of the time). Only a few, well trusted friends that I have knows over the years, comes to visit me over the years. The last time I was employed, was in 2020. Appeal will have no effect as all medical records necessary (that the neurologist has in his possession and has treated me since 2005) have been submitted in the original claim. There is nothing else to add. Like I mentioned, this matter has been handled with the utmost emotional coldness and clinical mind possible, the human element excluded. Incredible. Anti-phospholipid syndrome is a life-threatening disease (do your own research) and should therefore definitely be covered under critical illnesses. It is not prevalent and some statistics indicate that only 1 in 40 000 people suffers from it. We will be looking out for your feedback and successful outcome.
