**************
In 2023, I app**** for a Mobicred account to facilitate purchases through merchants utilizing Mobicred as a payment method. Unfortunately, my initial application was rejected on the grounds of my nationality, despite possessing a South African ID number, permanent residency, a stable job with a salary three times the minimum monthly requirement, and a South African bank account, which includes both a savings account and a credit card. This left me bewildered, as it seemed contradictory to the requirements stated during the application process. No where do they mention, “ONLY THOSE PHYSICALLY BORN IN THE COUNTRY CAN APPLY” because that genuinely seems to be the deciding criteria.
Undeterred, I recently reapp****, thinking that changes in my circumstances might lead to a different outcome. However, I am disheartened as my second application was also denied, with the reason cited once again being my place of birth. This occurred despite updating my details, securing a significant salary increase, residing in South Africa since 2006, and providing my South African ID during the application process.
I find it deeply troubling that despite meeting all the specified criteria, including living in South Africa for over 17 years and holding a South African ID, I am rejected solely based on my birthplace. The inclusion of a "Nationality" feature in the application process is, in my opinion, misleading if the outcome is predetermined by the applicant's birthplace, irrespective of their South African identity.
Each denial adversely affects my credit score, amplifying my frustration and sense of isolation. The explanation provided by a representative during a recent phone inquiry, stating that this is not ************** but rather a reflection of Mobicred's internal selection criteria, does little to alleviate my concerns. I believe that if an applicant satisfies all stated criteria, especially those directly related to their current status and financial responsibility, the refusal based on place of birth is a form of **************.
I implore you to reevaluate your vetting process to ensure that it is fair and does not perpetuate ************** against individuals who, like myself, have made South Africa their home. I find it disheartening to be excluded based on my birthplace, particularly when other financial institutions, including those in South Africa, have recognized my eligibility for services, as evidenced by my valid bank account and credit card, and my inclusion in the South African credit bureau database.
I sincerely hope that this matter will be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate measures will be taken to rectify this discriminatory aspect of their application process.
