Notice period on service not provided

I cancelled my contract with Matrix on 2 April 2015 since I had sold the car. I pay premiums in advance and I assumed I will not have any debit orders going through my bank account as the contract was cancelled. To my surprise I was told I needed to serve 30 day notice and a debit went off which I cancelled at the bank.
I requested to be escalated to someone senior as the call centre consultants could only tell me 'its a notice period' but was left holding for over 10 minutes with no one on the other end.
I would like to query the 30 day notice period. Ordinarily, I would gladly serve the notice if I was still in possession of the car and the tracking device. How am I expected to pay for the services I haven't received?
I would like to challenge this and take it forward with the relevant ombudsman if I can get their details.
