Mix Telematics faulty device cost me R2000 in expenses

I replaced my car battery in early June 2020 but within two weeks in went completely flat, despite the car being regularly driven. I took the car to be inspected professionally by an auto-electrician who immediately identified a problem with the tracking device as being the source of the drain on the battery.

I notified Mix Telematics and was told to take my car to a VW dealership before they would even consider looking at the device. They claimed that my mechanic must have "upgraded" something on my car and that the problem could not be the tracking device. This is laughable due to the fact that my car is nearly 20 years old and the most advanced piece of technology in it is the factory-issue radio.

I instead took my car to a battery centre where it was tested once again. I also photographed the test being done, showing that there was something drawing power from the car battery. I submitted this additional evidence to Mix Telematics who finally agreed to send a technician.

Their own technician again found that power was being drawn from the car battery. He tested the alternator as well and confirmed it was in good working order. However, he claimed the tracking device, although drawing power from the battery "did not meet their threshold for an abnormal amount". He admitted and agreed that there was nothing else in the car that could cause the problem and left.

One week later the car battery was drained completely flat and I was forced to once again call a mechanic to assist me, at additional cost. The auto-electrician then removed the tracking device and there have been no further issues - proving once again it is a problem with the tracking device.

I emailed Mix Telematics 6 times over three weeks with no response and now, finally, on 23 July, I have received confirmation that they have cancelled my contract but still expect me to pay for another month. The notice included a customer feedback which, unsurprisingly, does not work.

Mix Telematics have cost me R2000 expenses due to their faulty device. Their communication is non-existent and they show a complete disinterest that a client of over 10 years has cancelled their contract. I will not be paying them a cent more.

Dear Kaya

Clearly you haven't even bothered to read my complaint. When are you going to refund me the R2000 I've had to pay to tell you your device was faulty?
