Midcity Electricity poor service
Very frustrating to deal with. My prepaid electricity usage jumped from R3800 the previous month to almost R5000 this month and we are about to run out. Inexplicably, my usage has doubled in a month. Even with all the plugs switched off, I keep getting the same response from MidCity - maybe it's your tumble dryers or heaters - we don't use them. Perhaps it's your inverter battery that's switched off. R800 lasted 6 days. We continue to get the same response - our metre is working and this is your consumption. Avoid them if you can, rather go direct with Eskom.

18 Jun 2025, 16:04Good day Mr. Pillay,
Calvin Watkins, our Technical Manager has been in communication with you for the past two weeks. We did a meter test – and all was found to be 100%.We installed a check meter in line with your current meter (you can also see it on our App), and all is 100%.We provided you with historical data showing that for the first five months of this year you have been using less on average compared to the previous four years. Calvin called you today to make an appointment to see you in person regarding your concerns. Please note that end users / residents determine their own usage, and it is not controllable on our side. What affects electricity consumption?

- Weather – colder weather has impact on geysers as water entering the geyser is much colder.
- Geyser thermostat that is set too high or that is stuck / faulty.
- Usage of heaters, underfloor heating, warm blankets, air conditioners, taking longer showers or filling up baths with more water.
- Usage of stoves.
- Ineffective inverters or the settings on the inverter.
- Solar systems that do not charge batteries in full of solar but use Eskom / Municipal to charge batteries.
