Avoid MidCity Utilities if at all possible.
My electricity was turned off, without warning, after I accidentally short paid by R300. Despite a deposit of R3500, and again, without any warning or follow up, my electricity was turned off. Then, when I had disconnected the issue and paid the outstanding R300, along with an additional R115 penalty fee, my electricity was turned back on. But only for a few hours. It was then disconnected again. When I called to follow up, I was told that my account had reverted to prepaid and that was why the electricity turned off. It was changed back to postpaid and turned back on again. But once again, only for a few hours. It's now off once again. I've called again and was told the matter was being taken to Customer Services and they would call me back. All of this could have been avoided if they had simply warned me of the short payment as I was unaware that I had made the mistake. Now instead, I'm sitting with electricity that keeps going on and off every few hours.

We take note of your frustration and discontent. Please note that your account was not paid in full, and no arrangement was made with us for the short payment or request for later payment. Sms notices were sent after account was issued in December 2023 and a reminder sms was sent on the 3rd of January 2024 regarding the account still outstanding.
Unfortunately, as per your own accord, full payment was not made. No arrangement was made with us regarding the short payment.
We then proceeded to change the meter to prepaid and load the outstanding balance onto the meter - reason for the electricity being cut. We received POP on the 16th in the evening and electricity was restored. Unfortunately, the meter would not switch back to post-paid and we have arranged for the meter to be replaced ASAP today. We do apologise for the inconvenience.
Risk deposits are an unfortunate requirement on post-paid accounts (as per the Municipal Bylaws). To reduce the requirement for a risk deposit on your post-paid electricity, rather switch to prepaid as there is no requirement for a risk deposit on prepaid electricity. Should you in future not be able to make a full payment on your account, please arrange with one of our Credit Controllers before the due date of the 4th. Regards
