"It's my job" is no answer

Asked the security guy at the exit to Mica Eastagte why he wanted to sign my till slip... blank look for 30 seconds or so, re-asked twice. "It's my job", he eventually told me.

So perhaps someone from Mica here on HP can answer me?- what's the purpose of checking my goods and signing the slip?

My take is that you're assuming I'm a ***** until proven otherwise. Either that, or you think your till staff is sneaking goods out. Or both, and that your customers and staff are in cahoots.

Thank you for bringing the above to our attention. The matter will be handed over to the owner of the store.

Please be assure that this is not the service that Mica strives to achieve.

Well I don't think I've been in a Mica since then anyway. Not the only hardware store around. Best service is actually at my local family-run store. But back to my original question: please explain the rationale behind checking my goods against the till slip. Supermarkets don't check my groceries. Why does Mica deem it necessary to check? And whatever the reason, my main gripe is that the guard can't explain why he does it. Even if it's a poor one, if the guard can at least explain the reason, then I can understand the reason, while not necessarily agreeing with it. "It's my job" doesn't cut it.

Thank you for your response.

We understand your frustration and agree that the answer given to you is not suitable. We have already arranged that our Trainer visit the store to train the staff member.

The security checks point as you enter / exit the store fulfil an important role within the hardware retail environment.

As you are aware there are a number of armed ******ies taking place at various Malls around the country and the Security Guards’ role is more than just checking till slips, they act as a deterrent, assist customers with any queries and they are trained to assist all our valued customers in the event of an emergency.

As the larger, high value products purchased from our stores cannot be placed in carrier bags, the Security Guards check the slips to verify the items purchased as well as items that the customer has paid for that may need to be collected from a second point.

We hope that you see the value in the role that these staff members play and trust that you will visit our stores again.
