Metrofibre Terrible Service

Metrofibre is the worst fibre company one can ever deal with please do yourself a favor and stay away. Recently I took one of their packages, 250Mbps which goes for R849 per month. I had filled the form on 01 May 2024 and on 05 May 2024 their first team came to lay the cable from their underground box to the house. Then the following day, their technician came to do the splicing. In short I got connected on 06 May 2024 and that is when all the troubles started. Firstly MetroFibre speed was around 94Mbps download and around 84Mbps upload. It never went anywhere near the promised 250Mbps. Secondly, the 2.4G, which allows for longer range WiFi connection never for once worked. For both these problems, I was given ticket numbers which were supposed to have been resolved anywhere between 24 and 48hrs (at least according to their so-called service standard). There was also a series of disconnections between 06 May 2024 and 13 May 2024, which were attributed to "areal outages" or a "power failure their technicians were picking up in my house". Both of these were ridiculous to the core and to ******* them I had to take photos and make some videos. Regardless I never had any internet from 13 May 2024. . I ended having to submit a cancellation on 18 May 2024. Guess what? MetroFibre still issued a bill of R1489.45 at the end of the month. They claimed that is was for pro-rata charge of R739.45 and R750 that was said to be a "once-off service activated charge". I responded by asking them why should I pay for anything when their service ran intermittently only for the first 7 days of the contract? Even worse, for those 7 days, I never received the 250Mbps that I registered for! I also asked them to come collect their router, which they did on Friday 07 June 2024. I am still waiting for their response which I will use when raising the issue to ICASA. Companies like Metrofibre will get to understand that not all of us are just sheep waiting to be slaughtered. Do yourself a favour and stay away from Metrofibre.

After the reply above from Metrofibre, I received a call from
lady named Janice. Janice apologized for all the inconvenience caused and stated that she understands that it was an error on Metrofibre side that there was a bill for R1489.45 for not only an intermittent, low speed service, but also for the number of days of usage of 7 days. She promised that the amount on the account would be set aside. However, today (23 April 2025) and almost a year later, I received a message from Metrofibre, claiming that I have been handed over to Hahn Collections for an outstanding balance of R2338.45. How Metrofibre arrived at that amount for an internet that ran intermittently for only 7 days before cancellation has to be answered. As indicated before, Metrofibre is a huge ****mer which consumers should be weary of. They will never get a cent from me and if this will have to go to a court of law I am more than ready to do so. It will perhaps be something that will help other clients as well in the future.

Thank you Siboniso, I hope this will be resolved urgently. Hoe long will the "investigation" take? I am finding it very odd that an issue that was "resolved" last year already is not back with an even higher outstanding amount for a service that ran intermittently for only 7 days. Very strange indeed!

Please note that I have received your invoice and noted the following errors that indicate incredible confusion on your part:
  1. My service was activated on 06 May 2024, but I have noted that you have indicated that I had an outstanding balance of R2338,45, was actually the first day of internet service. How is it possible that I would be having an outstanding balance of R2338,45 or any amount for that matter, on the very day my service got activated?
  2. The service was reported to have problems of lower speed than what you advertised. Instead of 250Mbps I was receiving 94Mbps/84Mbps, which was in violation of the agreement.
  3. In addition to (2) above, I faced intermittent connectivity between 06 and 13 May 2024, which prompted me to report via the following Ticket Numbers:
    • 263419
    • 259703
    • 278818 (this one to complaints) - this because I was not getting any progress on the other ticket numbers
  4. From the 13 May 2024 it got worse because I got completely cut out. So I never had any internet and after numerous follow-ups I decided to cancel on the 18 May 2024 as your technicians were not providing any solution to my connection problem.
  5. You have sent an SMS informing me that you have handed my account over to Hans Collections (HC) for an outstanding amount of R2338,45. Yet on the invoice that you have emailed me, you indicated an outstanding balance of R1546,05. This is emphasizing the level of confusion with regards to an account that is not even supposed to exist.
In short, you are the ones that actually violated the SLA.
  • Firstly your ticket resolution has a turnaround time of 24 to 48hrs, which you dismally failed to honour.
  • Secondly, from 06 to 13 May 2024 I reported intermittent connection, which again you failed to resolve. Thus you cannot be expecting a client to pay a full amount for connectivity that went on and off.
  • Thirdly, given that I reported the problems on the very first day of service, which you kept promising to resolve but never did, you were deliberately stretching the cut-off period that is articulated on the Consumer Protection Act, 68 of 2008. Such a deception will be properly articulated in the National Consumer Tribunal as me and my legal team will be more than willing to present our case if this has go to that level.
  • With the service having been cancelled on 18 May 2024, there was not even a basis for the billing of 01 June 2024. Making things even worse, by that time I was calling on a daily basis for reminding you to come and collect your router, which you finally did on that very first Friday of June, which was 07 June 2024
So I owe Metro Fibre nothing and if this will take a legal route, I will meet MetroFibre at that level. It is something that will prove embarrasing and very costly to the company!

In reference to your further response on my email, which has a series of mistakes, here's my response:

  1. Please note that my service never saw it until the end of May. The cancellation was on the 18th of May after your technicians failed to attend to my requests for assistance. I have provided you the ticket numbers in relation to that on my previous email. So my account was never suspended by your company, I myself cancelled the account on 18 May 2024! Please note that I never received any service from Metrofibre after this point! So it is an outright lie to say my account was suspended.
  2. Please also note that you neither provided a reliable connection nor the correct speed as was agreed, which led to the early cancellation. The cancellation did not just take place, it was because you failed to honour your end of the bargain. If that was not the case I would still be a Metrofibre client to this day.
  3. You claim that an investigation took place in June. Please note that my service was no longer active in June. On the last call I had with a MetroFibre official who identified herself as Janice, it was after the cancellation when I was challenging as to why I should be paying a full bill for May. The credit that was to be app**** was going to be for the days where I had no service in May. So June didn't exist at all in the picture because by then the service was long cancelled.
  4. So the credit you are talking about actually applies for May, and NOT for the June account because I was no longer your client in June. So whatever you are talking about, investigations and all, were to be done in relation to the failure to resolve the ticket numbers that I provided, which were issued from the very first day until cancellation.
  5. Fortunately you say your service is paid in advance, so for a service that was cancelled on 18 May 2024, what were you "billing in advance" for a June when the account was already cancelled the previous month?
I was surprised when I got that SMS because the conclusion with Janice had been that given the intermittent service and a failure to resolve tickets on time resulting in a cancellation, the account was to be written off. This was informed by the fact that in terms of the Consumer Protection Act, Act 68 of 2008, consumers can cancel contracts without paying penalties if the cancellation falls within the cooling off period. In addition to the above, if your company considers the failure to honour the service that was promised, then indeed I shouldn't be paying anything to Metrofibre.

Now instead of a reply to the factual information I have provided with emails and registered Ticket numbers, MetroFibre has gone back to square one, where they are billing me the very amount they claimed to have corrected. I never received any feedback from the so-called Financial Department as Siboniso above indicated. The person who is now responding to my emails seems to be completely blank as I am being asked the questions that I have addressed before, including on this public platform, where they have been responding. The so-called credit they claimed to have effected (incorrect as it was) is no longer there. They are now using a debt collector to harass me. I guess me and MetroFibre will meet in the Consumer Court as I am also not going to budge! Please stay away from MetroFibre if you know what is good for you!

Good day,

Your response above refers. On 08 August your company stated that my issue will be escalated for "urgent review". It is now the 20th of August and I have not received any feedback from MetroFibre! What is the meaning of "urgent" if 12 days later, MetroFibre still can't resolve the matter of a service of 6 days they have to me! Imagine having had an intermittent service for 6 days, on a service that is pre-paid, but ending up with TWO VERY DIFFERENT INVOICES......for TWO DIFFERENT MONTHS. As to how a 6 day POOR SERVICE that resulted in a cancellation of a PREPAID service ended up with TWO different invoices, only MetroFibre knows! Even worse, is the audacity to tell LIES on a public platform as if the company is keen on resolving the matter, while in actual fact it is not! I have terrible news for MetroFibre, with me they have stepped on someone who is very much keen and ready to meet them on legal platforms!

Dear Vuyolwethu Sigonyela,

Thank you for your feedback.

Please allow us to clarify: the documents you received were not invoices but rather credit notes. These credit notes reflect that the disputed balance was credited to your account. As per the latest statement that was sent to you, there is no outstanding amount due on your account.

We regret the confusion this has caused and appreciate your patience while we addressed the matter. Should you require any further clarification, please feel free to reach out and we will gladly assist.

Kind Regards,
Siboniso
