MetroFibre – Nelson Mandela Bay

Review: MetroFibre – Nelson Mandela Bay

Date of incident: 26 December 2025 Location: Beach Rugby (Touch Rugby), Jeffreys Bay

MetroFibre should be deeply embarrassed by what its brand was associated with today.

At a public sporting event, the company sponsored a female team known as the MetroFibre Rugby Smurfs. Sponsorship in itself is commendable. What is not commendable, and what is outright unacceptable, is the conduct displayed by that team and the complete failure of MetroFibre representation to intervene.

The sponsored players engaged in blatant bullying, body shaming, and degrading behavior, including making *** noises behind opposing players purely based on their body type. This was not subtle. It was not isolated. It was deliberate, repetitive, and public.

What makes this worse is that a MetroFibre employee was physically present alongside them, witnessing this conduct and doing absolutely nothing. No correction. No intervention. No attempt to uphold even the most basic standard of decency or sportsmanship. That silence was endor*****t.

When a company puts its name on a team, it assumes responsibility for the conduct that team displays in public. Today, MetroFibre’s name was tied to harassment, immaturity, and a total lack of integrity. In a society already grappling with bullying, body shaming, and mental health consequences, this behavior is not banter or competitive spirit. It is toxic, and it reflects directly on the sponsor.

This incident speaks volumes about:

Poor corporate values

Lack of discipline

Zero accountability

A failure of leadership and brand stewardship

If this is the culture MetroFibre tolerates, or worse, ignores, then the company has a serious integrity problem. Today’s behavior caused real reputational damage, and it was entirely avoidable.

MetroFibre owes the opposing players, the event organizers, and the broader community a public explanation and corrective action. Anything less confirms that this conduct aligns with the standards the company is willing to accept.
