Medihelp today refused authorisation for emergency surgery as they allege that our membership fees were in arrears with R180. According to them, they increased their fees in January, but we were not informed of that, causing an insignificant arrears amount.

We were instructed to pay the arrears amount and an additional month's membership fees (only due on the 15th) to obtain authorisation, which we promptly did with an electronic bank transfer by 13h30. Proof of this payment was sent to them by email. Authorisation could still not be obtained by our brokers.

At 15h30 our broker was informed that we should have made a cash payment directly into the Medihelp account with ABSA bank. This was a contradiction of the earlier instruction, yet we immediately tried to comply, only to find that the ABSA branches have been closed.

I then tried to phone Medihelp myself, had to wait for 8 minutes, only to be told that the supervisors refuse speak to me about the problem and authorisation will only be given once Medihelp has confirmed my payment on their bank statement.

So for a measly 6% of the monthly premium care is withheld when in a crises. Peace of mind? NO!
