Medihelp: be careful when travelling internationally

I have been faithful member of medihelp for more than 30 years. My wife developed acute Guillain Barre syndrome in Mauritius, so severe she was admitted into ICU for treatment. Fortunately, my travel insurance(thanks to Hollard) paid the hospital bill. I only had to pay the initial fee (MauR 15 000) prior to admission. I claimed back from medihelp within 60 days with all proofs attached. It was declined - note medihelp did not have to pay a single cent for the hospitalization - with a note :; not emergency!!! Acute Guillain Barre is a life-threatening emergency hence admission and treatment in ICU! Clearly no insight in medical aspects, I doubt whether this was controlled by a suitably qualified medical person. She also had to receive Physio rehabilitation in order to be able to fly back assisted (much cheaper than medivac which medihelp would have had to pay) - this was also declined as well as follow-up visits in SA to neurologist and physio because of code 177 " not emergency". According to Council of medical schemes 906A, GB syndrome is PMB906A (acute condition) which includes "medical management" i.e not only physician fees, but medical management of which to my knowledge Physio is! During the issue and prior to departure, we mailed the funder so that they were informed all the way! best of all, since Hollard paid the admission except for the deposit and physio, it did not cost medihelp ANYTHING!

Medihelp insists that one should pay oneself first in case on international travel and then claim back........ ONLY tot be LEFT IN THE LURCH. Shame on you! Be very careful when travelling internationally - from my experience one cannot count on medihelp. Be careful, very careful

A big thank you to Me van der Heever from Medihelp, who not only phoned me, but got personally involved to try and resolve the issue. Often companies do not reply - at least a positive for Medihelp
