I purchased a Land Rover Discovery 4 from McCarthy Toyota N1 City, Cape Town in May. I traded in my Hilux with them, flew down to collect the Land Rover. When I tested the vehicle, it showed a suspension fault. The dealership said they sent it to Land Rover and it was fixed - apparently an air leak on the system. I also found that the wheel alignment was not set. This, they too had corrected, in my presence. I also saw an oil leak on the transfer case and pointed it out to the salesman who simply told me it was "sweating". I took delivery of the vehicle and drove back to Polokwane. I noticed a distinct whining/drone noise from the drive train which driving at speeds over 80km/h.
After arriving in Polokwane, I looked for the key for the tow bar, it was nowhere to be found. I contacted the salesman and he said he would arrange for a key to be supp**** by a locksmith in Polokwane, at their cost. This is fine except that I was told it would take 3 hours to do. I was inspecting the spare wheel when I found a large crack/split in the exhaust. I had this repaired and informed the dealership who have offered to pay for the repair. I then enquired about the registration and licensing of the vehicle, only to be told that McCarthy only register a vehicle and do not pay for the licensing of it, especially if the vehicle is sold outside of Cape Town - bizarre to me, seeing I was charged over R800. I have bought many cars in my life and have never been made to pay for the license myself. When I enquired about the noise on the transfer case and the oil leak, I was told that I bought a warranty and can claim from that. Again, bizarre to me seeing these problems existed before I took delivery of the vehicle. The reason that I was given was that they did not make much money on the deal and cannot afford to spend money on the vehicle. Had I know this, I would have simply cancelled the deal.
I was then further told that the salesman's manager was not happy with him regarding the deal because of the issues arrising. I said if the manager had a problem then he should rather deal with me as it was not the salesman that was bringing up the issues, it was me.
I have not been sent the details of the warranty that I purchased, save the name of it and the duration of the cover. I have no details of exactly what is covered, to what extent, how claims are made etc.
McCarthy and the salesman, regarding certain things, have been quick to try and resolve some of the issues but my biggest concern is the oil leak and noise on the drive train as this should have been checked and fixed before the vehicle was sold.
I really hope that all of this will be sorted out soon. I do understand that being so far from the dealership does make some things difficult to resolve but surely the vehicle should have been thoroughly checked before it was made available for sale? And McCarthy boasts of the 70 plus point check that they do on a used vehicle and the fact that Dekra did the roadworthy.
I have requested that these issues be resolved and await the outcome.
