Complaint – ********* Behaviour to Profit from Clients

My complaint is about the dishonest and ********* behaviour of McCarthy Toyota Midrand and for those who use or are thinking of using McCarthy Toyota Midrand to be aware so you are not deceived to part with your hard earned cash only for the dealership to unsuspectingly make a quick profit of you.

My vehicle was booked in for its 60000km service on 28 September 2016. There were numerous issues with one ********* issue that cannot be pardoned or condoned which I will detail in point 3 below. This is in addition to the poor service generally received from the dealership I am not mentioning in this complaint.

1. Under cover splash plate removed without my consent or knowledge and no replacement part was available to replace while removed splash plate was still usable.

2. Mag wheel was damaged and ownership of the damage not taken by the dealership even though an entry inspection was done noting all scratches and dents. CCTV footage was requested and no exit inspection was done on the vehicle.

3. BIGGEST CONCERN – Brake pad replacement that was not necessary

3.1. Service advisor called during the course of the service on 28 September 2016 stating the front and rear disk pads required replacement urgently as they were I quote “metal touching on metal”. I questioned the advisor stating this is not possible as the car is only on 60 000km and furthermore the mm reading on each service before clearly indicated this could not be possible as I am also well aware of my driving habits. Service advisor kept to his story and I did not give authorisation for the brake pad replacement to be carried out.

3.2. The prices quoted by McCarthy Toyota Midrand to replace the front and rear brake pads were between approximately R1000 and R1500 more than any other dealership. Checked with 3 other dealerships.

3.3. The service report from McCarthy Toyota Midrand stated the front brake pads had 2mm and the rear brake pads had 1mm remaining.

3.4. I decided to take my vehicle to McCarthy Toyota Centurion on 30 September 2016 as they provided me with the best quote to replace both front and rear brake pads.

3.5. On 30 September 2016 I was informed by McCarthy Toyota Centurion that my brake pads did not require replacement. The front brake pads had 3mm and the rear brake pads 4mm remaining. The front brake pads were discretionary replacement dependant on my driving habits. Due to the fact that the car was already prepared at the dealership I opted to change the front brake pads.

3.6. Subsequently the rear brake pads were only replaced at my vehicles 90 000km service, 30 000kms \ 2 services intervals later and the front brake pads could of possibly also lasted too at least the 75 000km \ 1 service interval later.

This type of ********* behaviour is totally unacceptable as the dealership placed me under undue stress using the safety of my family as a tactic to get me to agree to brake pad replacements without question at a R1500 premium to other dealerships. As a consumer I put my trust in receiving the best advice and service from McCarthy Toyota Midrand and not to be taken advantage of assuming I am an unaware \ uninformed client. Not forgetting all the other clients whom have already been and currently are being deceived into repairs and costs that are possibly not required and made to part with their hard earned money under duress to have their vehicles in an excellent safe working condition.

I did inform the dealership of the above via the website contact us form, the customer services manager and service manager at the time of the 60 000km service. No resolution was found as the conversations with the above mentioned persons was clearly conducted in the fashion as thou the dealership was doing me a favour and not from a point of integrity to provide a positive, concrete and definite resolution and\or explanation to the situation.

I would personally never use or recommend this dealership ever again to anyone due to the ********* and coercing behaviour used to profit from unsuspecting and unaware clients who don’t know any better about motor vehicles placing their trust in the dealership to advise them correctly and not see clients as a way to make a quick profit without any conscience.
