Passing the buck

End of November 2016 I bought an Gigabyte NVIDIA 710 graphics card from Matrix in Sasolburg. I needed it for light 3D rendering I was doing on a project at work. It was glitchy from the get-go, since the kernel kept crashing. If you Google "display driver nvidia windows kernel mode driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered" you will find 85 000 entries explaining this problem in detail. It is a very common flaw on this graphics card. Some users have been able to solve it, by rolling back the drivers for the card to an earlier version. It worked for me for a while if I was only working in Maya. The moment I open Photoshop or even the Chrome browser the kernel crashes and I can't go on with my work.

Trying to explain this to Matrix employees though is like trying to talk to a brick wall. All I want is a working graphics card. I'll even buy a more expensive one and pay in the difference. These people aren't listening though and keep telling their boss that I simply don't want the card and that I'm asking for my money back. This never happened.

These technicians and their boss are also trying to explain to me that this graphics card is not for rendering/modeling. I've been doing this for over a decade. I mean I teach 3D modeling and multimedia at a university. I know what the hardware requirements are. This motherboard has a tiny onboard GPU and even that can render my files just fine. Rendering is not gaming and for what I use the GPU for I bought from Matrix it is in fact over****.

Matrix has had the GPU for a few weeks now. The techinician has been running benchmarks on it and according to him benchmarking is the alpha and omega of checking if hardware works. This is a major problem, since benchmarking cannot accurately report problems. This technician and his boss seem to like to compare apples and oranges for fault finding. When I mentioned that this was a common problem with this specific GPU model it was just ignored. 85 000 Google entries regarding this issue means that it is not an isolated incedent. According to what I can see here on Hello Peter it seems Matrix is purely out to make a buck. Customers are only good enough to pay for problematic goods and services it seems.
