Matrix Hatfield - repair = destroy?
On the 17th of February, I took my laptop in to Matrix Hatfield, seeing as I only had good experience with them in Bellville, I assumed they were trustworthy and reliable. Huge mistake on my part. I called ahead to ask what the procedure would be, as I am a student and can't spend thousands of Rands. They explained that they would diagnose the issue first then call me with a quote on what needs to be fixed. They did not do this. I paid R550 for a 'laptop repair' which consisted of replacing a chip which is part of the power circuit but the reason the chip went in the first place was the back of laptop was not secure. I went to fetch my laptop before class at 8, their opening time, and it took them so long to literally hand me my damn laptop I had no chance to look it over before running to class at Tuks which starts at 8.30. Less than a week later, the laptop was giving the exact same issues. I took it back in and told them that a repair is not a temporary fix and that it is not what I paid for. They took it back, I fetched it 3 days later. They removed all the *****s and GLUED the bottom of the laptop. It worked in the store yet the back made clicking noises and I mentioned this to the workers and they literally just stared at me. As soon as I got home - 5 minutes later - it did not work. I called the complaints number on the invoice, which went directly to voicemail; directing me to Whatsapp the number instead. I did so. The number apparently belongs to the owner, Peter. Before responding to my message, he sends me video clips of a matrix store (not the Hatfield one) and then proceeds to say he is dealing with something and he'll back to me. As much empathy as I have for that situation, I did not need to know that nor is it at all business orientated to tell a client such things. He tells me the next morning at 2am to bring it into Matrix Hatfield 'early tomorrow', I confirmed they opened at 8 am and went. At 8.15am, the store was still dark and locked. I sent him a picture of it and told him it was extremely unprofessional to make someone walk the streets of Hatfield, at their request and then not be present. He apologised and said the manager had some taxi issues. He asked me to drop the laptop again and I said that I refuse to walk the streets alone with a laptop so he will have to wait until 5 pm so my boyfriend can walk with me. Two days later, apparently the chip for my screen blew and I said that is ridiculous, it was working fine when the power worked. So clearly, (it does not take a physicist to figure out but luckily I have done physics at university) the power surges from the initial issue not being fixed caused the chip the blow. A week later, I asked for an update. The day afterwards, I asked for a date that my laptop will be fixed by. As a university student, I have coding modules and many practical modules that require my laptop with specific software. I wanted my laptop back. It has been a month since the initial issue. Peter refused, blankly, to give me a date. In that time, I contacted the franchise manager (or so it says in his email), Deon de Wet about the issue. His amazing help - telling me to talk to Peter. On the 19th of March, I instructed Peter to talk to my boyfriend from that point on because it was evident I was not being taken seriously, whether it was the fact that I am a student or a woman; who knows. When he spoke to my boyfriend, on the 19th of March, he told him that apparently now my entire motherboard has gone. On the 4th, 5th, and 11th of April, he contacted Peter to find out the progress on the repair - on the 11th of April; Peter responds with pictures of a car accident. Again. I empathize; but that is not correct business etiquette. Things happen in everyone's lives all the time and yet we still have to attend to our responsibilities. On the 14th, Peter offered to meet up on the 17th to discuss a 'deal'. On the 16th and 17th Heinrich requested updates from Peter, with minimal response. On the 17th, Heinrich requested to meet up with Peter at the store to discuss everything in person as Peter indicated on the 14th. Peter then said we should meet up on the 18th. He said he would be there in person. The meeting was at 5pm. We were there before 5pm. We asked if Peter was there, his staff said no. We waited outside the store for a bit, when it was around 5.15pm we decided to walk around the plaza (where the matrix is), as it is small and we can still see the store. We assumed that Peter would contact us and let us know why he was late. 20 mins after the initial time of the meeting, we get a voice message from Peter instructing us to meet with Patrick. We went back into Matrix, to discover Patrick's shift ended at 4.30 pm. So clearly, Peter never had the intention of doing us the courtesy of meeting with us personally. We responded with a voice note saying that this has now become an extremely frustrating situation as it is 2 months after the initial incident and that we would like to know what the process would be from there. Peter responded extremely aggressively and verbatim 'I don't give a **** if you're getting irritated or not', 'I am being kind'. Well honestly, no. You guys *****ed it up. It is your responsibility to fix it. From there, we have not had contact with Peter. In between, I did speak to Deon - who responded with 'the Hatfield store is fully responsible to ensure the laptop is repaired' but nothing further. We got a call from Matrix to request us to come look at a replacement laptop. We went today (just after 5 pm, 20th of April). The laptop they are offering was a display laptop. That has scratches on it- superficial yes but if it is a display laptop - how did it get those. It is only 500GB in the hard drive size whereas mine was 1TB. And to top it all off. They want me to pay R2500 for it. They wanted to give me my laptop back with a 'refund' but they had done so much damage to it - how would R550 replace an entire motherboard. I have everything on record. Especially that lovely voice note from Peter. Let me know if anyone wants to listen to it.
