No communication about missing item

I placed an order and it was confirmed immediately, delivery was the next day which was a good turn-around. However, one of the items from my delivery was not packed/ not in stock. They did not bother to communicate this with me/ contact me to arrange an alternative or refund. This is really poor customer service and I will hesistate to order from them again.
