Unacceptable Service

Good day,

I would like to bring the following to your attention; my husband is currently a patient in Wilgeheuwel hospital.

1) On Saturday 8 October 2016, I had to go and buy fresh water for his bed side as it had not been replaced since Friday morning. The glass was filthy and contained water which he had rinsed his mouth with. The was no extra glass in which he could discard of the water used to rinse his mouth.

2) The ward was filthy and I cleaned the floor which was scattered with labels and the dustbin was still full of ******* from Friday.

3) The patient next to him was discharged on Saturday morning, and the linen and floor was stained with blood. The bed was only changed Saturday evening after visiting hours.

4) When the nurses washed him, the soap was not properly wiped off. His skin was itching because of this and I had to re-do the whole procedure in order to get him comfortable.

5) A drip that was not inserted properly by a male nurse resulted in the fluid infiltrating into the tissue of his hand.

6) On Sunday I noticed that the drips was not dripping and I had to re-call the nurse 4 times to fix it. The pain drip was leaking and dripping onto the floor. The floor was full of dried dripping marks of previous drips which also leaked.

7) On Sunday morning his dr ordered a CT scan. This was done at approx 09h30. The dr instructed the nurse to call him as soon as the results came in. At 19h00 I inquired whether the results had arrived. I was told that it arrived at 17h00 and that they had not yet contacted the dr.

8) At 19h30 on Sunday I insisted that they call his dr as he had been vomiting excessively since 13h00. They contacted his dr and informed him that he is feeling nauseous. They failed to inform the dr that he had been vomiting since 13h00. Fortunately his dr arrived within 5 minutes and inserted a tube through his nose.

9) The air-conditioner in the ward is not in working order and this results in a very uncomfortable position for an already sick person. I had to arrange for a fan for his bedside.

I believe that your hospital only uses generic medication. Is this true?

I have taken photos of everything as proof, and I will also advise our medical aid of the above.

Lastly I would like to bring to our attention that it took 2 visits to your emergency before the doctors there called the specialist on duty. Due to this lack of care my husband had to receive a serious operation as an abscess had already formed in his abdomen. I feel that this could have been prevented if the timeous necessary action was taken by your casualty doctors.

I trust that you will address this matter with the urgency it deserves and that I will receive your timeous feedback.
