No prioritising of patient's health
I went to Life Brenthurst hospital emergency on the evening of Friday the 26th of January 2024. I had severe chest pains, I was struggling to breathe, I felt dizzy and felt my body shutting down. My vitals were taken and they were normal. I asked for water and I was given a paper cup and pointed to the tap. The doctor came in, he asked a few questions. No physical exam was done. ( He did not even look at or feel my chest). He ordered some blood tests. They all came back as normal after a few minutes. He said they will give me pain medication which was administered via a drip. He came to check on me about half an hour and the pain was worse and I was crying and struggling to breathe. The doctor then said I need to be examined by a physician in the hospital the following day so he will be giving me more pain medication and sending me to the hospital ward over night. After this, the hospital administrator came in and said they will be sending details to my medical aid for approval but I should know that if the medical aid doesn't approve I will be liable to pay. The Estimated quote given for 1 and a half days was A little over R10 000. After a few minutes the lead nurse came in and said the medical aid has requested that a few more tests be done and if those tests are normal, then the hospital admission is denied as " they see no reason for admission". The blood tests were normal so the doctor said was sending me home because the medical aid said no admission. So I was being discharged in my condition with no diagnosis, no nothing, just go home because apparently the medical aid is refusing admission. The doctor said he could write a referral later for a physician but unfortunately because it was Friday night, I would be able to see the physician on Monday. If I wanted to see the physician in the hospital the following day I had to be admitted into the hospital. This meant that I had to pay R10 000 plus out of pocket. All of this is happening, I am still in severe pain and struggling to breathe. The lead nurse came in and said If I wanted to be admitted I had to pay the money and the bill would be a little over 20000 because there was no way the physician would let me leave after a day, it would be a minimum of three days admission. This is when I asked for the medical aid contact details. The administrator was called and he gave me the two numbers. Both numbers did not go through. This is when I got out of bed and went to the administration to demand that he gives me the contact details and name of the person from medical aid who declined my admission. After a very loud back and forth, the administrator said that the medical aid actually DID NOT decline admission, it was still pending because they had closed at 10pm. The feedback will be received in the morning. So he then said I should go and be admitted into the ward and we wait for the medical aid decision in the morning. I was taken to the ward and admitted just before midnight. I received a call early in the morning from the administrator and the medical aid had approved my stay. At 9am I was taken for Xray because the doctor Who was assigned my case requested them. At this point, He still had not come to examine me. The first doctor in that ward came in after 2pm to check his patient. Still no sign of my doctor, The nurses kept telling me he is coming. Another doctor came in and at this point I requested and pushed the sisters to ask that doctor to examine me because I had been waiting almost all day in pain for a doctor who still hadn't showed up and reluctantly she asked him. That doctor, Dr Charles, was very kind and friendly, He did a physical exam on me and checked my chests, asked a lot of question about my health and ordered more blood tests. He told me what he thought my diagnosis is but said I should wait for my assigned doctor. My assigned doctor came, it was well after 3pm. Our very first interaction. He glanced at my file and was ****ed off that the other doctor examined me and wrote notes. He then said I needed to get another test done on Monday. I asked him to then discharge me and have me come back for the test on Monday. It made no sense for me to sit and wait for him for another 2days in my condition just so that he can take another test, At that point I was over the lack of prioritising my health and had made the decision to seek healthcare services elsewhere. He agreed to discharge me and said I should meet him on Monday at his private rooms outside the hospital. He spent less that 2 minutes with me and he did not even look at my chest, he did not feel my chest, and he did not ask me any questions. My health was never a priority to anyone in that hospital. Terrible experience at that hospital and I will never step foot in it again. I went to the emergency room to get help only for me to be given the run around and for my health to be put at risk
