No Generic

My child was prescribed Orelox by the doctor. When getting the prescription filled at the Life Fourways hospital pharmacy, my wife was not offered a generic by the pharmacist ( it is law that a pharmacist needs to advise a patient that a generic is available when a generic is on the market). Despite a number of generics of Orelox being on the market, the most expensive brand (originator product - Orelox) was dispensed. When I later called the pharmacy to complain, the Dispensary manager told me that despite Orelox being a popular antibiotic, and a number of generics being on the market, the generic of this product is not on Life’s formulary and therefor they do not stock it. I find it unacceptable that Life hospitals do not stock cheaper generics of this expensive antiobiotic, when it is the government and medical aids intentions to bring down the cost of medicine through generic substitution. Consumers need to be aware that Life Hospital pharmacies do not offer consumers the most cost effective medicines on the market.
