Life Midmed Hospital

I am not yet sure about the exact contact details of all parties involved...but today I would like to make my frustration and heartache known.

I don't want this to happen to anyone else.

The authorization on the medical aid for wound care says Smith and Nephew Pharmaceuticals, the medical aid statement says Patel R and Partner with Practice number 508349 and then admission was at Life Midmed Middelburg.

This October my mother went into Life Midmed Hospital in Middelburg for a wound debridement procedure on a diabetic wound underneath her foot. All went well with the procedure and mom was well on her way to recovery. No side effects from any of the normal stuff i.e. anaesthesia.

My mother had to go for wound treatment weekly at the Life Midmed Hospital and around the end of October, beginning November I suspect my mother got infected in her wound. My mother texted the sister on 10.11.2024 that her leg was warm and there was a bad smell coming from her foot. The sister simply said that she was off and that if the foot was not red,it was okay. Warm and smelly should already set off alarm bells. Note, that only the sister opened and worked on the wound and that there is only one sister and if she is not available....too bad for you,no other arrangements will be made.

By 11.11.2024 we had to have my mother transported to Life Midmed by ambulance as she ran a high fever and was in immense pain.

The end result is that after a month of fighting all the various bacteria picked up in wound care and in hospital,my mother passed away at the age of 57 on 17.12.2024.

I don't know if you will understand my anger....but I am very upset that the place which I entrusted my mother to had led to her death.

How does it happen that a hospital is overrun by bacteria and that a patient seems to not have any chance to come out on top. Now,my mother was a fighter....she had a major operation a few years back which they said she might not survive, but she came out super strong and now she was not given a chance to come out even almost strong.

She had dialysis (was on a catheter), she was on a ventilator which took away any last chance of her speaking, she suffered greatly and at the end was fighting for her last breath.

In hospital my mother suffered another setback with perforation of her bowel and had to go through another operation, weak as she was. The nurse simply asked me,do you think she is strong enough to make it.... My mom was lying in that bed begging to use a toilet before this happened because she didn't want to use the nappy, but the sisters refused as they very well knew how weak she was. Thus my mom held back all her gas and **** because she was ashamed of using a nappy, after which her abdomen started swelling and becoming enlarged and very hard.

The vacuum machine of her foot fell over in the theatre and was not working, the wound care nurse simply said that she is not available and would come that Tuesday, the operation was on the Friday mind you.

Then there were nurses, who would be so disrespectful and barely anyone who would tell you what was going on. Here and there a proper nurse would inform you and tell you of the progress that she made with my mother and that was so great - you could see the pride in her work. But the rest seemed to just be frustrated by their jobs. If you are working with people's lives, you need to have a willingness to try your best to help save the patient's life. My mother had two blue swollen bruises on her forehead and a purple line on her cheek right before she passed and she was too weak and tied to the bed and not able to inflict the bumps herself.

My mother passed on Tuesday, but by Sunday I could see that the nurse did not take care in hanging bags properly or keeping objects from underneath my mothers body and she also bumped over the foot vacuum machine, but at least it was still working.

My mother was fighting for her last breaths and that is a memory that will stay with us forever.

While she was fighting for her last breaths, the nurse answered her private calls in the room. This is the same nurse that calmly asked me whether I thought my mother would make it through the operation.

My mother suffered from the following list of bacteria, which I picked up from blood tests and septicemia...which was brought on by the bacteria:

Foot wound had a profuse growth of Staphylococcus aureus - MRSA and Corynebacterium (These two caused septicemia and damage that affected by mother till the end)

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Fungitell 1,3-beta-D-glucan, Amp C, Gram neg coccobacilli.

By the time the Dr had the bacteria under control,my mothers organs could not keep up anymore and in a last attempt they put her on dialysis two consecutive days which was too much for her to handle and too late for all the fluid buildup in her body.

This all because of an infected wound...

I tried daily to motivate my mother to get better, but she was put up against enormous odds.

I have always treated my mothers wounds, ulcers and blisters and never once were they ever infected or smelly. This time I thought that she needed professional assistance and what a big mistake that was. I will forever regret sending my mother to Midmed and forever regret having someone else treat her wound, even if it was a trained nurse.

I will live with this regret for the rest of my life, we could have still had our mother and our children could still have had their grandmother, but I sent my mother to the battlefield of which there was no return.
