Horrible Experience at Life Rosepark Hospital

I am a type 1 diabetic that was told by my physician to go to Life Rosepark Hospital's Emergency Room on 27 July 2016 after I had started vomiting. He was afriad that I might be ketoacidotic due to having the flu - the infection naturally causing my blood glucose levels to rise. Usually my glucose levels are within good range, but during the last 3 weeks I had been experiencing hypos and hypers on an etreme basis despite monitoring my levels very closely. Therefore, fearing the worst, I went.

When I got to the ER - still feeling horrid - I saw the Triage nurse with my glucose levels at 11.5mmol/L and was told that they were quite busy. I said that it would not be a problem if they could just get me on a saline drip as soon as possible so that my blood glucose doesn't go any higher. They gave me a yellow sticker and I waited. For two hours, even after explaining to the staff about the danger of not having fluids in your body (i.e. your insulin cannot be used to treat hypers), with blood glucose levels by then at 21.0mmol/L, the staff did not want to help me. They kept telling me that they were busy - and I understand that - but they were rude and unwilling to help me at all. So I waited.

When they finally had a bed available in the ER (even though I said that I would sit in the waiting room with the saline drip because it's becoming a life/death situation) they took ages to get the saline drip set up. When my physician was able to see me he prescribed antibiotics due to my vomiting my antibiotics earlier the morning. It took the nurses 2 hours to realise that my drip wasn't working properly. This happened at 18:00 when I'd been there since 11:00. I felt like the staff ignored me because I wasn't allowed to go to the bathroom and had no way to call anyone for help. When my partner came back at 20:00, he was able to get help so that I could go to the bathroom for the first time since 07:00 that morning. I had previously told nurses I needed to go and they either did not hear me or they did not care...

At 22:00 I was still in the emergency room because even though I should have been admitted to the hospital, they had no available beds. I did not mind that they did not have space, however. There were people in much greater need of being in hospital than I was! By then, no one had told me if I had been admitted yet or not. I got sick of it and had enough. Not only did they take forever to treat a possibly life-threatening situation, were rude and ignored me for hours when I had to urinate, but during the entire day - while I was there to monitor my glucose levels and get them under control - did they test my blood glucose more than once. I tested with my own monitor through the whole ordeal. I could not believe that a private hospital could be so careless. I then had my partner call a nurse to bring my the proper forms, stating that I deny any further medical treatment. It was an almost impossible feat.

I went against my physician - who I respect more than any other person in the medical profession - regarding my care because the Life Rosepark staff was incapable of helping me or just downright refused to. If I had not been monitoring and controlling my own glucose levels throughout the day I surely might have left the hospital through the morgue instead of through the door. I am disgusted with what I experienced - so much so that I literally ran out of there. Please don't let this happen to anyone else. It might very easily cause death. I will do everything in my power to never use Life Rosepark Hospital again.
