As patients undergoing care, many of us are on intensive daily medication regimens that require proper, reliable nutrition. Unfortunately, the current food portions, schedule, and catering service flexibility fall far short of acceptable healthcare standards. Key Concerns: Insufficient Portion Sizes: The meal portions provided during regular mealtimes are systematically inadequate for adult patients, leaving us consistently hungry throughout the day. Flawed Evening Schedule: Supper is served as early as 5:00 PM, followed only by a single slice of bread at 10:00 PM. This schedule leaves patients facing a five-hour gap followed by an inadequate late snack, resulting in persistent hunger overnight. Rigid Refusal of Extra Portions: When patients request larger portions or seconds to satisfy basic hunger, staff issue flat refusals with no accommodation for individual dietary needs. Disproportionate Value for Service: At a daily rate of R3,800 for hospital stay, adequate nutritional support should be a fundamental baseline. The current catering standard fails to reflect the costs billed to patients. Proper sustenance is a critical component of medical recovery, physical strength, and overall patient wellbeing. We urge management to immediately address these issues with the service provider, adjust portion sizes, and revise evening food options to ensure patient needs are adequately met.
