Eugene Marais pasiënt neglect
My mother was admitted to Eugene Marais Life Hospital on the 13th of Januarie 2026. She Has Heart Failure and COPD. I did not have her Living Will with me, but I clearly stated that she does not want to be resussatated. They called 03h00 on the 13th to say that they are putting her on a ventilator. I told them that it is against her wishes, but they phoned to inform me, is what the sister said so I went on the 14th to sign a DNR. Her Physician is Dr Mushi. I asked for another doctor, but they said if he was previously her doctor we cannot get another one. She has been sedated and on a ventilator since. They lowered the sedation, but she had to be restrained because she wants to take out the ventilator. So they increased sedation again as I requested. On Wednesday the 4th of February, Dr Mahlefalo phoned me to say that Dr Mushi said he must phone me because they have to do a tracheotomy on my mother, because she has been on the ventilator too long. As it is against her wishes, I took her Living Will to the hospital as he asked. On arrival I gave them her Living Will and signed a new DNR as the 1st one was filled in incorrectly. I just signed the 1st one, i did not fill it in. As I went to see my mother I saw that her mouth was full of maggots. I was terrified. When I asked the sister why, she said "I don't know. We are pumping her stomach". I was too upset to ask any further questions so I left. I did lay a complaint with the Hospitals Complaunts Manager but I have realised that this is completely unacceptable. I cannot leave it there and let it happen to someone else. Lindi van Rensburg.
