Absolutely disgusted!!

My gran was rushed through to the Life Flora Clinic on Sunday 7 August 2016 by an ambulance as we heard that this is a top class hospital in the West Rand (we have only been in the West Rand for about 2 months), my mom and I were unable to go with as we do not have a car but an managed to organise a lift at a little bit of a later stage.

When arriving at the hospital we were greeted by a very unorganised front desk in casualty, when going through to see my gran we were then greeted by a doctor who quite rudely asked why we were not there when my gran was admitted, explaining to him that we do not have a car and had to make a plan to get there he then didn't apologise for being so rude before knowing the facts.

My gran is a COPD patient and cannot wear a closed mask for oxygen but instead needs the nasal mask, surely a qualified doctor who studied for many years should know this... Well clearly NOT this doctor. Anyways after being in hospital for almost a week in section B (where my gran complained the nursing staff were extremely rude, I didn't think much of this as my gran can be a little fussy and difficult at times) my gran was discharged by her specialist.

3 days later my gran was rushed back to the Life Flora Clinic - Monday 15 August 2016 where she was admitted into section B high care. As explained earlier we do not have a car so we would call my gran twice a day (mid morning/ afternoon and at night before she went to sleep) when speaking to her she would constantly complain about the nursing staff, how rude they were, how they acted like they didn't care about their patients and just frankly always had an attitude. Again I didn't think much of it as she is quite old.

When visiting her on the weekend, Saturday 21 August 2016 and Sunday 22 August 2016 I experienced this awful service for myself.

When arriving on the Saturday my mom and I both greeted the nurses as walking in and didn't even get one hello back, we then asked where we could find my gran and after getting such an attitude for interrupting their little chat session we were told where we could go. When entering high care there was a nurse sitting next to my grans bed (as in high care there is a nurse 24/7 to monitor the patients as these are critical patients and anything could go wrong at any stage) watching TV, my gran introduced us as she is always so proud to show off her daughter and grandchildren. At first this nurse seemed okay (better than the nurses at the front desk in section B).

We visited my gran for a good couple of minutes when a second nurse came in, obviously from a lunch break. In this time my mom stepped out quickly to get my gran a pair of headphones from the main reception so she too could watch some TV while in hospital, my mom was told all she had to do was get a sticker from the nurse in section B and she didn't have to pay for them. When leaving we asked the front desk in section B for the sticker when the first nurse in high care overheard we were looking for the sticker she got extremely rude and said we could get it from her. We never knew this, she did also hear us telling my gran but not once mentioned we could get the sticker from her.

Leaving there the Saturday I now experienced first hand what my gran was talking about however gave them the benefit of the doubt thinking maybe they had a long day as nurses do have long working hours.

When arriving the Sunday my mom and I walked into section B once again greeting the nurses and not even getting a hello back, after visiting with my gran for a while again my mom and I walked out and once again greeted the staff (even though we were ignored the 3 times before that) as we left, the only person who bothered to greet us back was the lady assigned to clean the floor that day.

When visiting the Saturday and Sunday 28 and 29 August 2016 the exact same treatment once again.

I then had enough of the nurses and their ****py attitudes in section B so decided to call the head nurse and lay a complaint, she said she would address the issue with the staff but not say who phoned as I was scared if they knew it was me my gran would be treated even worse and be victimised. As far as I understand the head nurse did indeed tale this issue up with the staff and personally visited my gran which I appreciate however the horrible treatment still continued.

We visited my gran on the 4th and 5th September 2016 where she had now been moved to a normal ward still in section B. My mom and I yet again greeting the staff as we walked in and surprise surprise not a hello back.

And this is the case every single time my mom and I go visit. My gran still complains to me about the service and lack of interest from the nurses at section B.

Being a nurse can absolutely be challenging and I take my hat off to those individuals as I myself would not be able to go through what they do - long hours, horrible pay and seeing disturbing scenarios day in and day out BUT every single one of you took an oath!! If this job is not what you thought it was or is no longer what you want to be doing then leave!! Give someone else a chance, someone who is actually passionate about nursing and helping the sickly!!

Life Flora Clinic your nurses in section B are a disgrace and a massive disappointment!! Those patients laying in those beds are sickly and the families visiting are stressed as is about their loved ones laying there, we do NOT need your ****py attitudes because your little chat sessions (which are quite often) are being interrupted or because you don't feel like being there. Get your asses into gear and start treating your patients and their loved ones with respect and dignity!!
