Lenmed Lanesia nurses misconduct.

I am sharing this review on behalf of my brother, Bryan Ndlovu, who was recently admitted to the New ICU at Lenmed Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital. His experience was profoundly distressing, both emotionally and psychologically, and it compels us to speak out publicly.

During his stay, Bryan was subjected to ongoing mockery and emotional abuse by ICU nursing staff. It began after he politely requested assistance to use the toilet rather than a bedpan, due to difficulty walking and needing to stay on oxygen. What followed was a pattern of humiliation — led by a nurse named Gladys (a woman with glasses) and supported by others on shift.

They turned his personal medical needs into a recurring joke. Remarks like, “He’s probably pressed with poo,” and comments during visiting hours like, “After eating that, he’ll definitely mess himself,” were made within earshot. When Bryan sarcastically asked for a bedpan to try to end the mockery, the behavior escalated.

Shockingly, these unprofessional actions were passed on to the evening shift. Nurses such as Sandiswa and Sophi continued the abuse. Even Unit Manager Andile Mtshali, who witnessed inappropriate behavior firsthand — including a nurse touching Bryan’s face with a phone camera while he was asleep — failed to intervene.

Bryan was also body-shamed in Zulu, mocked for speaking with his family, and referred to as a “mama’s boy.” Conversations he had with visitors were repeated by nurses later — strongly suggesting that his privacy was violated. Even worse, his medical diagnosis and condition were reportedly discussed with other patients, constituting a clear violation of patient confidentiality.

This behavior contravenes both the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) guidelines, which require healthcare professionals to respect and protect the confidentiality, privacy, and dignity of all patients.

Bryan felt so dehumanized and unsafe that he discharged himself prematurely at 5:00 AM on Sunday, June 8th, 2025, not because he was well, but because he could no longer endure the abuse.

This is not just a failure in bedside manner — this is institutional negligence, and a violation of basic human rights. We demand a full investigation into the staff involved and the immediate implementation of disciplinary and corrective action.

No patient — especially one in critical care — should be subjected to this kind of mistreatment.
