Smile and say 'Cheese'!
I remember when Lancewood Cheese first arrived on the scene here in South Africa. I was impressed with a brand that suggested quality and a move away from the average. The company’s logo, packaging and approach seemed to promise quality and style.
What a disappointing situation today!
Lancewood now mass produces a product that the supermarket giants can purchase on the cheap and sell, often on ‘good deal specials’. Desperate shoppers with a crippling inflation-stretched budget to handle and always on the look-out to save a bob or two, succumb to what is affordable.
I have thankfully discovered another supplier of basic cheeses, the stuff mother once put on our sandwiches to take to school for the lunch break. They were simply cheese sandwiches that tasted of cheese and not unscented soap.
We live in a land of smoke and mirrors in South Africa, celebrating mediocrity every day. Now at last we can smile, drink a toast to this fact with a glass of wine if we are lucky and once again, enjoy a cheese nibble that tastes like cheese.
