Shocking Roadside Assistance Service
On Thursday 9th September 2021, my car wouldn't start as I had left the lights on for the day when at work (roughly from 8am to 4:30pm) so the battery was completely flat. I called King Price and said that my battery was flat as I had left the lights on. I can't remember if I had said I need a jump start. A flat bed tow truck arrived and they attached a booster to the battery. The car's ignition turned over but wouldn't start. We left it for a few minutes and tried again to no avail. The driver offered to push start which also didn't work which was when he offered to tow me. My point at that stage was that I would have a car with a flat battery and only in need of a jump start, towed to somewhere else where I would sit with the same problem. When I asked about jumper cables he made a valid point that they weren't allowed to jump start cars as a truck has a 24 volt battery and a car only has a 12 volt battery. I then called King Price again and asked to have someone sent out that would have a smaller vehicle (car or Bakkie) WITH JUMPER CABLES so my car could be jump started. Not long after the call, a tow vehicle (Bakkie) arrived, also with a booster. I told the driver that the previous booster hadn't worked as the battery was really flat from me leaving my lights on. When I asked the driver to connect the jumper cables he told me he didn't have any and said some vehicles in the fleet are issued with jumper cables and others not, and he hadn't been issued with any. When I told him that I specified with King Price that I needed a vehicle with jumper cables he said that the message was not conveyed to him. He then told me he would contact his office and see if someone else was in the area that had cables. After the driver left I called a friend , Jacques, who is a mechanic and asked him to be on standby with jumper cables if he could. I received a follow up call from King Price to ask me if the tow truck had arrived. I told the call centre agent that he had arrived but not with the correct equipment and that I was still stuck in the same place and they needed to follow up with the tow truck company if anyone else was being sent out. I then received another call from King Price to say that if they send out another vehicle, it will be seen as the 3rd roadside assistance call and clients only get 3 free calls per annum. When I asked how one unresolved call can be counted as 3 separate instances I was told "I am just making you aware". I cancelled the call and Jacques came out with his Bakkie, connected his jumper cables and the car started immediately and I have had no issues with it since. I don't blame the towing companies and their staff members at all, I blame the total lack of communication and understanding and total incompetence of the King Price call center staff. The fact that the final call center agent could use initiative or apply logic is beyond. I am actually quite glad that I experienced this poor level of service during a roadside issue and not with a bigger claim. This is one customer you can say goodbye to.
