Jeulia jewellery - pros and cons

There are pros and cons to buying from Jeulia.

Cons

- You think that because the website ends in .co.za that it's South African. It's not. Your jewellery will come from China. Therefore, there will be a duty amount charged by DHL when it arrives in the country. And DHL don't work off the invoice included in your shipment. And I know why. Jeulia valued my parcel at 20USD. Obviously it isn't that amount. The real amount that I had to pay for duty was about half of the amount I paid for the jewellery.

- I thought that maybe the website mentions that you will be charged duty and I just missed it. I checked. It doesn't. So, I complained to the local telephone number which ends up in not a local location. The lady was helpful, said she was sorry to hear I had been charged duty and would send me an e-mail shortly. I didn't bother asking her what the content of the e-mail would be, because she was struggling to speak coherent English. When the e-mail came, it offered me a R300.00 refund towards my duty expenses. I accepted this offer and was duly refunded. When checking the invoice included in the shipment, it clearly states that duty is payable by the buyer. So, there's no point in Jeulia pretending they didn't know I would be charged duty.

- Of course, all this duty business means telephone calls, e-mails, EFT payments and headaches with DHL trying to get the jewellery cleared through customs.

Pros

- The jewellery is perfect. There are no manufacturing problems. The engraving was correct as I had spelt it. The ring fits perfectly. (Those complaining that their rings don't fit perhaps had not correctly used the ring size guide on the website ...)

- The jewellery they offer is often unique and I haven't seen anything like it locally. They are very avant garde in their designs and that appeals to me.

Be fully aware of the pros and cons and then make your mind up how you want to proceed.
